Aperture was a winning entry in the 2025 Microhome International Competition.
Aperture is shaped by the balance between exposure and solitude. Framing nature as the focus of its living space, Aperture wraps the resident within to create privacy in dense emergency housing. The form and layout are fundamentally oriented by placing key views to the exterior within a direct line of sight from key interior moments. This arrangement allows the resident to eat, sleep, work, and relax in full privacy while always keeping a view of the beautiful world outside.
Just as the home’s form balances exposure and solitude, its construction balances permanence and impermanence. The home is raised on columns which anchor into the ground with Ground Frame footings, which require no concrete, and can be easily removed following deconstruction. The lifted structure allows some nature to pass through and limits soil compaction and pollution while the home is in place. Additionally, with this use of solar panels on the roof, a rain-water catchment device, and a high-performance envelope, the home is intended to operate off-the grid and in a regenerative relationship with its site.
